The Golden World Cup
The World Cup 2014 might have come and gone, but the legacy was left. If you thought that the Brazilians would not be able to beat the Vuvuzela's and Zakumi, you thought wrong. The Brazilian's did an even better job, if I have to say so myself. Here's a thing everyone thought that Brazil will have the difficult task in doing better than South Africa, but guess what they did a magnificent job! The Fifa World Cup 2014 was the most watched tournament in the history of the Fifa tournament gold.

Here's a thing, with the world moving to digital media, it helps sport tournaments such as the World Cup to be the most viewed and be the most loved. Okay, lets back-track a bit 2010 was a good World Cup even if I have to say so myself, but back then Social Media wasn't as big as it is these days! Which is why this World Cup will go down in history as one of the best World Cups ever. Fifa had four different social media operating successful at the same time.
OH! BUT WAIT...SOCIAL MEDIA IS TAKING OVER.

Let me start with Facebook. People were able to stay in touch even if there were in their offices, because people were involved in conversation. Whatever team was playing people took part in the conversation, the page was the most liked page during the World Cup http://goo.gl/tLKwEh. Wasn't there a minute were you stopped and you were like, let me check what is happening on Facebook? I know, I had those moments especially during the big matches. Than there was Twitter.

Everybody knows nowadays that Twitter is the new "communicators bests friends." This is where people ran to see the latest scores, looked at the most trending topics of a particular match. Facebook is good, but Twitter is even better because it convenient, it the new "news room." Think about it really now, if we didn't have Twitter we would have waited for news Bulletin to see the score, the next best thing . Like really now, who has the time to wait for the news when you have the news on the palm of your hand? I know I don't, or maybe you still wait for that 3 seconds Sport bulletin, were most probably you won't even see that brilliant goal being scored! Instagram tells the best stories.

This baby (Instagram) is taking over all social networks. You are familiar with the following words "a picture tells thousands words?" Well that's what happened exactly during the world cup, we would look at the pictures in order to see what happened. This social media was the 3rd most used http://goo.gl/rJwnkF . Than came the old mate YouTube.

You want to watch it over and over again? Guess what YouTube give you that chance, even after the World Cup we can still watch the Highlights of the most bizzar goals and well the most humiliating score lines we've ever seen http://goo.gl/79490U even the women's world cup is shown. Now looking in teams of Public Relations and Social Media, working together as one it turned the World Cup 2014 to be thee Best World Cup ever, don't you think? Don't you get the feeling that things are going to get better with Social Media assisting Public Relations in reputation management? I would like to know your views on Social Media helping Big tournaments such as this, is it giving it the high hype it needs? Or do you think PR can do more, than just relying on Social Media?

  2. I have to agree with you Social Media had backs of many people. Especially when it came to the results, because most of the games played late. So people just watched the score-line in the Social networks. Thanks for the comment :-)

    1. It so true, Social Media has a way of making people from all walks of life engage on a subject, even if they don't understand nor follow it. That's was the goal for Fifa to get people, to be in-conversation with one another. And this time it was Soccer. Thank for the comment!

It amazing to see what Social Media did for the World Cup hey, and the PR it got.The fact that some people were at work. But, they still know what was going on in terms of the score and they could see what was trending through Twitter and Facebook it so amazing.

Simply because I could not avoid the buzz, it was on every social network, almost every radio station and television channel!!! THE PR WAS DONE PHENOMENALLY. So in a nutshell social media and the PR behind the world cup managed to turn me from a soccer rebel to a soccer fanatic

  11. its so innovative how football clubs or national teams (locally or international) use social media for announcement, like the starting line-up of teams before the game starts both on facebook and twitter, and also announce a new signing of a player.

    1. So true, and I think that is one way of engaging with the fans. So that they can know what the starting-line up is and show or tell the fans the latest news via social media. And well while they doing that the club earns itself a name of having a good reputation. Which attracts new sponsors and new players in he club!

  12. I have to agree with you Nomfundo, the advent of Web 2.0 has resulted in the Public Relations landscape to transform which consequently has allowed us to reconfigure our communications and modes of delivery. Social media has definitely played a vital role in the success of the 2014 Soccer World Cup and I, myself am excited to see the role that social media as a whole will play in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

    1. I have to disagree with you, I think PR that was used phenomenally during the World Cup and it worked in favour of the tournament. I mean people were able to keep up with the live score just by checking their Facebook pages and some could check it on Twitter

  14. Yes PR was certainly used well during the world cup! I agree! Loved the blog Nomfundo!
